Description: Wellhead Protection Areas are the areas of influence on the land around a municipal well, the size of which is determined by how quickly water travels underground to the well, measured in years. For source protection planning, the Clean Water Act required that a standard 100 metre radius circle be provided around each municipal well; that is called the WHPA-A. The WHPA-B represents the 2-year time of travel. The WHPA-C represents the 5-year time of travel and the WHPA-D represents the 25-year time of travel. The shape of the WHPAs is based on numerical hydrogeological modelling results for all of the York Region production wells and are dynamic to some degree, since they can be influenced by a number of factors such as the slope of the land, the depth of the well, and the type of sediment. The maps that this data is based on have supporting reports that discuss their development and are available via the Water Resources group. Please refer to the Clean Water Act approved symbology when using this data.
